Is Shakeology OK While Pregnant or Breastfeeding? My Doctor’s Advice & My Experience

I get questions like these often: “Is it safe to drink Shakeology while pregnant?” “Can I drink Shakeology while breastfeeding?” And it’s something that I myself have asked my doctor about during my pregnancy, and now, while nursing.

The short answer is: yes, Shakeology is safe to drink while pregnant and breastfeeding!

Honestly, best way to give your baby a better chance at being born strong and healthy is by giving yourself the right nutrition. Well, that’s what Shakeology helps to do, right?! So my question is: how it could it not be good for the baby?

Misconceptions about Shakeology during pregnancy

Misconception #1: “It’s loaded with crap.” Because it’s labeled as a “shake” a lot of people automatically think it’s packed full of weird crap. They think it’s meant to accelerate your body into losing tons of weight or gaining muscle, but that’s not what it’s about at all! Instead, it’s a dose of dense nutrition. It’s 70 non-processed, clean, vital nutrients that your body needs.

Misconception #2: “I’m going to lose this baby weight before it happens.” Yeah, Shakeology can help you lose weight and prevent gaining weight, but that’s not the goal when drinking it while pregnant or nursing! Ultimately, the goal is to help you and your baby get the nutrition you need.

Try not to go into drinking Shakeology with the wrong mindset, don’t think of it as a meal replacement or weight loss shake. Just think of as a delicious way to get the vitamins you need!

“Consult your physician” while pregnant or nursing

The packaging of Shakeology says something like “please consult your physician.” But as the creators of Shakeology, Darin Olien and Isabelle Daikeler, put it, “that’s because we have to do that.” They have to abide by rules and regulations, they have to tell you to consult your doctor, but the truth is: it can only help you!

Take a look at this interview with Shakeology’s creators to see what else they had to say on the topic.

Shakeology vs. Prenatal Vitamins

While I was pregnant, I brought my Shakeology to my OB, just to be safe. During this visit she compared the vitamins and nutrients in Shakeology to prenatal vitamins. And guess what?

Shakeology covered almost all the essential aspects as the prenatal vitamins.

The only things that Shakeology didn’t have were DHA and Folic Acid. Pretty amazing, right?!

So through my entire pregnancy I substituted my prenatal vitamin with:

  • 1 Serving of Shakeology
  • DHA Supplement
  • Folic Acid Supplement

Is there too much Vitamin A in Shakeology?

Some people question whether there’s too much Vitamin A in Shakeology. Definitely a valid concern since certain forms of Vitamin A (retinol) in too large a quantity can lead to birth defects. But, just like fats in your diet, there’s the good kind and the bad kind. The Vitamin A found in Shakeology comes from beta-carotene and natural whole food sources—it’s good for you!

My Experience with Shakeology While Pregnant & Breastfeeding

Shakeology has played a critical role in my pregnancy and now while I nurse. As I mentioned my ShakeO was approved by my OB and I used it during my pregnancy as a prenatal. I’m also continuing to use it while I nurse!

While it helped me get my vitamins (my main goal), it also help me in other ways…

It kept me “regular.” TMI? Yes, but anyone who’s had a child knows what constipation is like during pregnancy! I was not about to put up with that!

It kept my energy up. During my last two pregnancies (before being introduced to Shakeology) I remember being tired. But this time, I felt like I had so much more energy!

I helped me fight cravings. Umm, hello, chocolate is my lover! My chocolate shake helped me beat that craving and then fight off other potential unhealthy cravings throughout the day.

I felt better. While I was pregnant with my other 2 girls, I was so sick almost the entire time. This time? Much better! The first trimester was still tough, and Shakeology was the only thought I could stomach for a while—much better to have vitamins and nutrients to soothe the nausea than a loaf of bread!

And now while postpartum, and unable to workout, it’s been helping me heal, recover, and avoid mindless snacking!

The Conclusion: Should you drink Shakeology while pregnant or nursing?

Yes! It can only benefit you. It’s always smart to talk to your doctor about your nutrition, but chances are, they’re going to tell you it’s ok!
